Verlene Hammett

Verlene Head Hammett, 75, of Orange, passed from this life Tuesday, March 10, at Baptist Hospital of Southeast Texas in Orange.

Born July 18, 1939 in Orange, to Willie Vertice Head and Edna Mae (Peet) Head, she was a lifelong resident of Orange, a homemaker and a member of the Winfree Baptist Church in Orange. Verlene enjoyed growing vegetables, century plants, making crafts, baking wedding cakes and cooking foods from scratch.

Verlene is preceded in death by her parents; son, Mark Allen Hammett and her sister in law, Tiny Head.

Those who will most cherish her memory are her husband of 57 years, Jerry L. Hammett of Orange;daughter, La Trisha Ann Matthews and her fiancé, Harry Saucier of Orange; sons, Jerry Hammett and Eric Hammett both of Orange; sister, Jeleta Miles and husband, George of West Orange; brother, Vertice L. Head of Orange; grandchildren, Amber Webb Megan Matthews and Erica Arline and husband, Lance; great granddaughter, Isabella Grace Arline and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Services to remember and honor Verlene’s life will be at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, March 15, at the Winfree Baptist Church, with the Rev. Keith Royal, pastor of the church officiating. Rite of committal and interment will follow services at the Orange Forest Lawn Cemetery in West Orange.

A gathering of Verlene’s family and friends will be from 5:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. Saturday at the church.

Honoring Verlene as pallbearers are Jim Murray, Scott Ficken, John Taylor, Steve Culp, Larry Haynes and Elmo Johnson.
