BC dentist donates land for new BCPD station

One Bridge City dentist's generous donation will save the city some time and money.

Dr. Mark Messer donated some land at Lake Street and Texas Avenue to build a new Bridge City Police station, according to City Manager Jerry Jones. The lot is behind the RaceTrac filling station.

Jones said Messer approached him nearly three weeks ago about donating the land, free of charge. The city is in the process of surveying and transferring the deed.

“He wanted to do something for the city and we appreciate it. The council is excited,” Jones said.

Another tract of land was being considered for the police station on Rachel Street behind city hall at the city council meeting on February 3. That track of land would had cost the city $40,000.

Jones said the tract of land at Lake and Texas is worth significantly more than the Rachel property and the city can now put more money into the building.

“Police will be able to get in and out easier. Also, there's a red light there,” he said.

The existing police station on Texas Avenue near Bridge City High School will be put on the market and sold. The proceeds from the sale will be put in the city's reserves.

“It's a win-win,” Jones said.
