Pinehurst apartment complex tabled at meeting

A decision on the building of small affordable apartments on Raven Street in Pinehurst was tabled at the regular meeting of the Pinehurst City Council on March 24 due to the developer being absent to answer any questions.

Joe Parkhurst, city administrator, said the development will be a four-plex, one and two bedroom apartments. The units will be 1,000 square feet, affordable housing.

Mayor Pete Runnels said he has seen eight gas meters at the property.

The council approved the annual Pinehurst Spring Cleanup Day from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the old Parker Lumber on Saturday, April 11 after Easter Sunday. Dumpsters from Allied Republic Services will be set up, free of charge to the city.

No hazardous material such as paint, insecticides, batteries, old tires and refrigerators and air conditioning units that has had the coolant removed.

Originally, there were 23 who applied for the city administrator position. The pool was narrowed down to six interviewees. One finalist withdrew their name leaving five.

Two or three applicants will be recommended to be interviewed by the city council on Thursday and Friday.

Parkhurst said Planet Fitness will open April 15. He estimates the business probably spent $200,000 on the club.

“It’s a really nice facility and I think it will work out real well for the city of Pinehurst,” he said.

The old Pinehurst police chief’s vehicle was turned over to the Pinehurst Volunteer Fire Department which converted it to a medical first responder vehicle.

The PVFD will place their decals on the vehicle. Parkhurst said the department was “tickled to death” to receive the vehicle. It will be less expensive and safer to drive the car instead of the big trucks on first responder calls.
