The Bridge City Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that The Record Newspaper has been named Business of the Month for May. Janelle Sehon accepted the award, sponsored by Sabine River Ford, from Ambassador Rick Bridgers of Texas Paint and Drywall at the May Coffee hosted by Achtwoo Pool & Spa Professionals. The Record received gifts from Tiger Rock Martial Arts of Bridge City, Little Caesars Bridge City, Texas Gumbo Hut and Grill, Serendipity Chicks and Mary Kelone, LMT.
The Penny Record was started in 1958 by Walter Gaston, his wife, Audrey, and their two daughters. The Record is delivered to 20,000 homes weekly, free of charge. These free publications are published each Wednesday and features community news, local sports, commentary and more. Both issues are available online at TheRecordLive.com. It has offices in Bridge City and in Orange.
Roy Dunn, acquired the community newspapers in 1990. He is now publisher of The Penny Record which covers the Bridge City-Orangefield area, and The County Record which includes all of Orange County. Prior to this, Dunn started a community newspaper called The Opportunity Valley News. He later bought the Triangle Press, a commercial printing plant. He later sold the business to a national corporation in 1981.
Some of the writers who have passed through The Record include: Dr. Arlene Turkel, Christ Farkas, Margaret Toal, Jerry Childers, Pattie Hanks, and many others. Longtime columnists are Capt. Chuck Uzzle and Capt. Dickie Colburn. Current staff are Mark Dunn, Evelyn Brandon, Janelle Sehon, Liz Weaver, Bill Pope, Mike Louviere and David Ball.
