Lamar softball wins Red Cup Award

For the second time in the past three years, the Lamar University softball team won the Red Cup, given to the Lamar sports team that logged the most community-service hours over the course of the academic calendar.

The softball team logged 757 hours, which ranked among the leaders among all Southland Conference sports teams.

“We try to teach our student-athletes to be all-around good people,” Lamar softball coach Holly Bruder said. “Community service is a part of that.”

The softball team wasn’t the only squad giving back to the Golden Triangle. All told. Lamar student-athletes put in 1,517 community-service hours during the 2014-15 academic year.

Over the past year the Lady Cardinals were involved in several events at the Food Bank of Southeast Texas and the Buckner Children’s Village in Beaumont. They served the Thanksgiving dinner at the Arc of Beaumont, were at the Christmas Adoption at the Southeast Texas Humane Society, helped clean area beaches, helped at the Museum of the Gulf Coast’s spring clean and Habitat for Humanity’s cleanup and were often helping out at the Campus Community Garden at Lamar among other activities.

“We are so grateful to give back to the community that has given so much to us in our three short years at Lamar,” Bruder said.

The team will be honored during ceremonies at a Lamar football game this fall.
