Hometown News For Orange County, Texas
On the east bank of the Sabine River between Burkeville, Texas and Leesville, Louisiana is a small part of Burr's Ferry, a Confederate fort. The remains of the fort look like mound of dirt bordered by a shallow ditch. These were hand dug fortifications. If the Yankees had gotten past Sabine Pass and entered the Sabine River, they would have encountered Confederate troops at Camp Plesant, at Nibblet's Bluff. Past those troops was the fort at Burr's Ferry.
The original attempt to preserve Burr's Ferry was done by the United Daughters of the Confederacy. The area is not maintained and preserved by the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
There is a small picnic area and a hand pump for cool water. The site is open for public use at no charge on a first come, first serve basis.
