They called it the "Year of the Cardinal!" Tonight began a new era for 'Big Red' debuting new head football Coach Dwayne DuBois and a strategic make-over for Bridge City.
On Friday night the the Cardinals whipped the state ranked Kirbyville Wildcats 24-21 opening night on the road. The "Year of the Cardinal" begins.
Bridge City punched away at Kirbyville. Offensively the Cardinals, led by quarterback Camden Dubois and the explosive stride of Patrick Morris, ripped away at the Wildcats.
The defense was spearheaded by middle linebacker Derick Dearing and a swarm of others shutting down Kirbyville's ground game. Dearing coming up with a key fumble recovery on the Wildcat 8-yard line late in the second quarter.
The Cardinals went into halftime leading 14-13.
It was an outstanding performance by a team definitely out to make a statement and set the tone for things to come.
The Cardinals will get their hometown debut next Friday against the Newton Eagles at Larry Ward Stadium.
• The Orangefield Bobcats defeated the Buna Cougars 42-26 at home. Next Friday the Bobcats get a crack at Kirbyville in Orangefield.
• The West Orange-Stark Mustangs defeated cross-town rival the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears 26-13 in the annual "Orange Bowl" at Dan. R. Hooks Stadium.
Next Friday night the LCM Bears host Barbers Hill. The WOS Mustangs take on the Port Neches-Groves Indians for a rumble at the reservation.
