SOST concludes worldwide journey with “Russian Nights”

The Symphony of Southeast Texas (SOST) concludes its worldwide journey of musical cultures of this 63rd season with a jaunt around the Russian countryside in “Russian Nights” on Saturday, April 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the Julie Rogers Theatre. Guest pianist Sean Chen, winner of the Crystal Award at the 14th Annual Van Cliburn Piano Competition in 2013, joins the orchestra for a season finale concert not to be forgotten.

Chen will dazzle the audience with his virtuosic playing of Sergei Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C Major. Chen has been hailed as a “charismatic rising star with exceptional ability to connect with an audience” and empowered by his impressive virtuosity. He was named the 2013 Christel DeHaan Classical Fellow of the American Pianists Association and continues to earn accolades for performances that are “dazzlingly executed, full of colors and nuance.”

“Russian Nights” will open with the spirited “Festive Overture” by Dmitri Shostakovich marked by typical Russian bravura and brilliance.

Then, joining the orchestra will be the Symphony of Southeast Texas Chorus under the direction of Dr.

James Han performing Leonard Bernstein’s “Chichester Psalms.” “I love the design of the ‘Chichester Psalms,’ and it is so much fun for the choir to perform,” said SOST Music Director Chelsea Tipton, II. The work is filled with jaunting rhythms, melodies, and of course that heartfelt magic Bernstein wonderfully creates.

“We are so fortunate to have such an excellent choir wonderfully prepared by director, Dr.

James Han,” Tipton added.

The last piece of the evening closes out the season in spectacular fashion with the “Polovetsian Dances” of Aleksandr Borodin and its recognizable melodies and themes.

“Russian Nights” is co-sponsored by Baptist Hospital; Mr. Chen’s appearance made possible by Regina Rogers.

Single ticket prices range from $18 to $45; senior, student and group discounts are available. To purchase tickets or get more information, go to http://www.sost.org or contact the Symphony office at (409) 892-2257.

The Symphony of Southeast Texas continues its mission of presenting educational, entertaining, and culturally enriching programs of the highest artistic quality and, as always, promises to be “Good to the last note!”
