West Orange to hold Spring Clean-Up next week

The old adage of doing spring cleaning will be a reality for many people next week in one local community.

The City of West Orange has announced plans to hold its annual "Spring Clean-Up" from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m., Friday, April 15, and 8 a.m. 3 p.m., Saturday, April 16. Containers will be available for the disposal of various debris and items behind the West Orange Volunteer Fire Department, which is in the 2700 block of Austin Avenue.

"We've been doing this for several years, and its always been very popular in the community," said Mike Stelly, West Orange Chief of Police and Public Works Director. "It gives our citizens the opportunity to clean-up and get rid of things that are not part of normal household garbage."

Residents will be able to dispose of a variety of items at the clean-up event, including appliances such as old stoves, microwaves, washers and driers, and refrigerators and freezers will be accepted as long as the unit has been drained of freon and tagged by a person certified to do the work.

Green waste such as limbs and shrubs will be accepted as well.

Although the purpose of this is to help keep West Orange clean, certain items will not be accepted at the clean-up. This includes normal household waste, as well as tires, batteries, paint or other hazardous materials.

"We generally have a very good turnout every year," Stelly added. "It's a great way to help the residents in our community and it helps the environment too. We just like West Orange to look as good as it can and this is a great way to help do that."

The clean-up event is strictly for West Orange residents only. Proof of residency and photo identification will be required for those wishing to dispose of items at the facility.
