Styx rocks out in Lake Charles for Labor Day weekend

The Record

One of rock's true iconic bands proved why it is still one of the most popular touring attractions year-in and year-out this past weekend.

Styx returned to Southwest Louisiana for the first time in over 16 months for a Labor Day weekend concert this past Saturday (Sept. 3, 2016) inside The Event Center off L'Auberge Casino Resort in Lake Charles, La. The band left no doubt that it is still on top of its game as witnessed by the capacity crowd.

The band, which features Tommy Shaw and James "J.Y." Young, both on guitar and vocals, kept the audience energized from start to finish during its 14-song, 90-minute performance. Joined by bandmates Lawrence Gowan, keyboards and vocals; Ricky Phillips, bass and vocals; and Todd Sucherman, drums, the group was smiling as much as the fans who were in attendance as hit song after hit song was met with roaring approval.

The band opened up with "The Grand Illusion," from which featured songs comprising the bulk of the group's set this night. and segued into the popular "Too Much Time on My Hands," while still managing to work in treats such as "Man in the Wilderness" and a cover of the David Bowie classic, "Space Oddity," featuring Shaw and Gowan.

The band closed with its trifecta of fun as the crowd cheered loudly for songs "Come Sail Away" and "Paradise Theater," complete with multiple confetti cannons, and the set closer "Renegade."

Styx has a music career spanning five decades, but do not underestimate this rock band because it is still one of the most entertaining acts on the road in 2016 and with good reason. They enjoy what they do and it shows.
