Bobcats edge Buna

The Orangefield Bobcats moved to 8-1 in district with two wins last week. The victories keep the Bobcats in second place behind the undefeated in district East Chambers Buccaneers who won their last two games by only a combined five points.

The Bobcats had a thrilling game against their longtime rival the Buna Cougars on Wednesday, January 25, in Buna. The playing of the game was delayed one day because of the hazardous weather that passed through the area on Tuesday.

The contest was a nail-biter from the start with Orangefield leading 13-12 after one quarter and by five points 25-20 at the half. The Bobcats took a six point advantage to the final period when Buna rallied to get within one point before Orangefield won 52-51 to sweep the two district games with the Cougars.

Pete Ragusa was the high scoring Bobcat with 15 points, and he assisted on 7 baskets by his teammates. Orangefield's two post players had strong games. Koen Maddox scored 12 points to go with 4 rebounds. Morgan Sampson led the Bobcats in rebounds with 8 while tallying 6 points.

The going was a little easier for Orangefield on Friday against the Hardin Hornets. The Bobcats won 80-34 after leading at halftime 48-8 holding the Hornets scoreless in the second quarter.

Ragusa again led Orangefield in points and assists with 18 and 5 respectfully. Maddox was in double figures for a second straight game with 11 points and had 5 rebounds. Freshman Jaden Scales scored 10 points. Leyton Loft was the top Bobcat rebounder with 7 boards in the game along with 6 points.

The Orangefield Bobcats traveled to Warren on Tuesday to play the Warriors. The next game for Orangefield will be a rematch with the East Chambers Buccaneers on Friday, February 3, at the Orangefield Gymnasium. East Chambers won the first meeting with the Bobcats 62-48 at Winnie.
