The girls' basketball teams are down to their final week of the District 19-4A schedule. The Little Cypress Mauriceville Lady Bears (7-2) have clinched a spot in the playoffs but need to close with three wins in their remaining games to ensure being the second seed for the post season. The West Orange Stark Lady Mustangs and the Bridge City Lady Cardinals both had two games remaining on their seasons.
The Lady Bears had a bye early last week before playing the Lady Cardinals on Friday. The game was close at the half but LCM pulled away and won 42-20 over Bridge City.
The defenses were strong for the two teams with only twelve points being split evenly by them in the first quarter. The Lady Bears led by four 15-11 at the half.
The third quarter was the turning point for Little Cypress Mauriceville as the advantage ballooned to twenty points. The Lady Cardinals failed to register a point in the period trailing 31-11 going to the final quarter.
The Lady Bears played tenacious defense forcing 21 turnovers by the Lady Cardinals. LCM also controlled the boards getting more rebounds than Bridge City in the game.
Keylie Washburn of the Lady Bears was the leading scorer with 14 points. Haelee Fitzhugh scored 8 points for LCM while Annabelle Fisher and Chrissy Joseph both added 7 points. Whitney Cunningham led the Lady Cardinals with 9 points.
Bridge City played district leading Silsbee on Wednesday. The Lady Cardinals lost 65-35 to the Lady Tigers. Kaylee Britten and Makenna Knight had 7 points apiece for Bridge City.
West Orange Stark won 34-17 over the Vidor Lady Pirates on Wednesday to sweep the two district games between the teams. On Friday, January 27, the Lady Mustangs lost 49-36 to the Lumberton Lady Raiders.
The remaining games of the district schedule will find the Little Cypress Mauriceville Lady Bears playing at home this Friday against and then at Jasper next Tuesday. The West Orange Stark Lady Mustangs play their final game on Tuesday at home against the Silsbee Lady Tigers. The Bridge City Lady Cardinals host the Vidor Lady Pirates this Friday before traveling to Lumberton next Tuesday for their last game this season.
