Evelyn Walker Hughes, 91,Orange

Evelyn Walker Hughes, 91, a former longtime resident of Orange, passed away on April 21, 2023, in Wylie, Texas. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 26, at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange. A graveside service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Orange Forest Lawn Cemetery in West Orange. Officiating will be Reverend Clifton Rankin. The procession to the cemetery will depart the funeral home at 1:45 p.m. Born in Many, Louisiana, on August 22, 1931, she was the daughter of Paul Cecil Walker and Nonie Elizabeth (Stroud) Walker. She graduated from Stark High School in 1948 and later received multiple advanced degrees from Lamar University. Evelyn was a longtime member of McDonald Memorial Baptist Church in West Orange, spending many years serving as a Sunday School teacher and singing in the choir. She was a third grade teacher at West Orange Cove for one year before becoming the Career Education Coordinator for West Orange Cove Independent School District. She also served as student counselor at Mauriceville Elementary School and then ended her career as the Director of Special Education for the Little Cypress – Mauriceville Independent School District. Evelyn’s loved ones will go on to cherish their memories of her and hold them close to their hearts. She is preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Nonie Walker; beloved husband, Burnice G. Hughes; siblings, Anita Walker Brown and Ruth Walker Fleming.

She is survived by her daughter, Lisa Hughes McClellan and husband, Jim; and granddaughter, Megan McClellan Stember and husband, Sterling.
