LTC Ed Meyers, 81, Mauriceville

On Tuesday morning, October 10, 2023, LTC Ed Meyers of Mauriceville, Texas, crossed over peacefully, attended by his loving family and his best fur baby, Chi. Following a brief illness and after a day spent visiting and laughing with old friends, Ed received his final set of orders, and now his rambling, restless soul is finally at peace.

James Edward Meyers was born on August 27, 1942, in Lufkin, Texas, to Charles William “Charlie” Meyers and Ruby Robinson Meyers. His life was almost immediately affected by the events of World War II as the family moved to Orange, Texas, so that his father could begin work in the shipyards supporting the war effort.

Ed attended Mauriceville schools, and graduated Salutatorian of his class in 1960. He was offered a four-year scholarship to college but opted instead to get married and start a family. Ed married Carol Mahfouz in March 1962, and they moved to Roselawn and began their life together. It was there that Ed would embark on two careers which would afford his family a comfortable life – DuPont SRW and the U.S. Army, first in the National Guard, and finally the Reserves, retiring from the military at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Anyone who knew Ed knew he had contracted polio as a small child, but he never let that affect what he wanted to do in life. If told he could not do something due to the polio, not only would he just go do it anyway, but with great fervor. As a teenager, he rodeoed and rode bulls. During his military career, he defied the odds and graduated from Army Airborne School, serving our country as a paratrooper. With Carol’s strong support and encouragement, he attended Officer Candidate School and graduated. He was always a strong believer that one should never let a condition like polio stop one from doing anything, and he lived it!

Ed had a very distinguished career in the Army, earning many medals and distinguished honors, among them the Army Service Ribbon, Joint Service Commendation Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal – 1st Oak Leaf Cluster before retiring in April 2002.

When his marriage ended in 1979, Ed found his way back out to Mauriceville where he would spend the rest of his life. He enjoyed being outdoors, tending livestock, and was an avid and knowledgeable collector of military memorabilia. He married Linda Peck in 2004, and they enjoyed attending the Cowboy Church until her death in 2016. For the rest of his life, he enjoyed being surrounded by friends and enjoying a good beer, agood story, and a good laugh.

Ed is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Sidney Meyers, sisters Sherry Elmes and Linda Gale Meyers, his first wife and mother of his children Carol Meyers, and his second wife Linda Lou Meyers. He is survived by his children: Jan Meyers of Mauriceville, Jon Meyers of Houston, and Joel Meyers of Orange, two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, andmost especially his beloved fur babies Charlie, Lady, and Chi.

Cremation arrangements were entrusted to Dorman Funeral Home, of Orange. Services to celebrate Ed’s life will be held at a later date with details to be announced.
