Lady Bobcats win two but Lady Cardinals drop first district match

It was a difficult week for two local volleyball teams. Bridge City and Little Cypress Mauriceville in Class 4A both failed to win a match, but Orangefield in Class 3A won both of its matches in four sets.

The Orangefield Lady Bobcats won an important match over the Hardin Lady Hornets on Friday, October 13, at Orangefield. The Lady Bobcats defeated the perennial district favorite Lady Hornets in four sets.

After grabbing the first set 25-23 the Lady Bobcats dropped the second set by a score of 21-25 to the Lady Hornets. Orangefield won two close sets 27-25 in the third and 25-23 in the fourth and deciding set.

Greenlea Oldham had a big night with 15 kills and 2 blocks. Lela Francis was at the top of her game too with 12 kills, 4 blocks, and serving 4 aces.

Kaitlyn Jenkins made 8 kills for the Lady Bobcats. Hannah Block was the team leader in digs with 13 followed by Brianna Moore with 10 and Eliese Gravett with nine. Brianna Moore led Orangefield with 41 assists. Other contributors were Ava Dyer and Charlee Sanches with a block each.

On Tuesday, October 10, Orangefield played at Winnie against East Chambers. The Lady Bobcats lost the very close first set 26-28 before winning the next three sets 25-18, 25-21, and 27-25 to capture the match.

The Lady Bobcat leader in kills was Kaitlyn Francis with 13 which was one more than Greenlea Oldham. Lela Francis made 3 blocks one more than Oldham. Addi Moore led Orangefield with 4 aces two more than Hannah Block.

Bri Moore was tops in assists with 36 to go with 13 digs. Block made 17 digs, Eliese Gravett had 13 and her sister Kaylea Gravett contributed 12 digs.

The Bridge City Lady Cardinals had their second half bye on Tuesday, October 10. On Friday the Lady Cardinals played at Bridge City against the Vidor Lady Pirates who won on Tuesday in five sets over the Little Cypress Mauriceville Lady Bears.

The Lady Cardinals won the first two sets against Vidor 25-18 and 25-20. The Lady Pirates rallied winning three straight sets 25-19, 25-13, and 15-12 to claim the upset victory. It was Bridge City's first loss in district.

After losing in five sets to Vidor the Lady Bears played Lumberton at LCM. Lumberton also won in five sets handing Little Cypress Mauriceville its third straight loss.
