The first half of district games wrapped up on Friday, January 12, for the four local girls basketball teams. The second half started Tuesday for the Bridge City Lady Cardinals, the Little Cypress Mauriceville Lady Bears, the West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs and the Orangefield Lady Bobcats.
The second week of January saw Bridge City and Little Cypress Mauriceville both win one and lose one game while West Orange-Stark lost its only game played to first place Silsbee. The Lumberton Lady Raiders moved up in the District 19-4A standings with wins over the Lady Bears and the Lady Cardinals.
The Bridge City loss to Lumberton on Friday dropped the Lady Cardinals into a second place tie at 4-2 with the Lady Raiders. Lumberton won 45-40 at home.
The Lady Raiders scored the first six points of the game and enjoyed a 10-7 lead after the first quarter. The lead expanded to seven points by half time 24-17 in favor of Lumberton.
The Lady Cardinals played a strong third quarter to pull within two points 28-26 with eight minutes to go. Lumberton finished well though outscoring Bridge City 17-14 in the final period.
A look at the statistics showed the Lady Cardinals probably lost the game at the free throw line. Bridge City only made 8 of 28 free throw attempts.
Whitney Cummingham led the Lady Cardinals with 16 points. Kaylee Britten had 9 points and 5 rebounds. Kennedy Campbell scored 7 points and made 6 rebounds for Bridge City.
The Lady Cardinals fared better on Tuesday, January 9, beating the Vidor Lady Pirates 49-41 at Bridge City. Kaylee Britten played very well with 9 points, 13 rebounds, and 3 steals. Kennedy Campbell was the Lady Cardinal with the most points scoring 14 to go with 5 assists, and Nicole Sasser tallied 13 points with 7 rebounds.
Little Cypress Mauriceville lost to Lumberton 43-30 on Tuesday, January 9, at the Dr. Pauline Colburn Hargrove Gymnasium. Lumberton took an early 6-0 lead and never trailed in the game.
The Lady Bears made a comeback effort late in the third quarter that got them within two points 28-26 with ninety seconds to go in the quarter. The Lady Raiders answered by scoring the last four points in the third and the first seven of the final quarter to squash any realistic hopes for LCM.
Like the Lady Cardinals in their game with Lumberton a failure to hit free throws plagued Little Cypress Mauriceville. They Lady Bears made only 3 of 13 free throws.
Keylie Washburn only scored one point in the first half before finishing with 14 points to lead the Lady Bears. Maya Meadows carried the LCM offense early scoring eight of the team's fourteen first half points and had 10 points in the game.
Little Cypress Mauriceville rebounded on Friday, January 12, at Jasper. The Lady Bears more than doubled the hometown Lady Dogs 68-24 to even their record at 3-3 in district tying LCM with the Vidor Lady Pirates for the fourth and final playoff position with the second half of district still to be played.
Four Lady Bears scored in double figures. Keylie Washburn led the way with 19 points, Kendall Jones was next with 12 points, Lindi Perry popped in 11, and Paisley Angelle added 10 points for Little Cypress Mauriceville.
The lone game of the week for the West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs was against the Silsbee Lady Tigers. Silsbee remained undefeated in district drilling the Lady Mustangs 70-32 on Friday night. WOS dropped to 1-5 in district.
West Orange-Stark and Little Cypress Mauriceville opened the second half of the district schedule at the Lady Bears' gymnasium on Tuesday, January 16. The Lady Bears play at Silsbee on Friday while the Lady Mustangs are at home on Friday against Bridge City. The Lady Cardinals opened their second half at Jasper on Tuesday.
The Orangefield Lady Bobcats finished the first half of district in second place with a 6-1 record their only loss coming at the hands of Kountze in the district opener. Orangefield trailed first place Kountze by one game when the two teams met for the second time this year on Tuesday, January 16, in Kountze.
Orangefield went to 6-1 with a 76-27 triumph at Anahuac last Friday. The Lady Bobcats had a great team effort in securing the nearly fifty point victory.
Mikayla Locke was the leader for Orangefield with 18 points, 6 steals, and 3 assists. Paisley Reeves scored 10 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Brooklyn Wagoner, Steeley Franklin, and Olivia Smith all tallied 8 points apiece. Kaylea Gravett got 4 points, made 5 assists, with 7 steals.
The Lady Bobcats won a close one on Tuesday, January 9, at home against the East Chambers Lady Bucs. Orangefield took the game 40-35.
Greenlea Oldham led the Lady Bobcats with 13 points and 6 rebounds. Mikayla Locke made 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals. Kaylea Gravett scored 6 points to go with her 3 steals and 2 assists. Olivia Smith had a strong game defensively with 5 steals and 4 rebounds while chipping in with 5 points.
The Orangefield Lady Bobcats will follow up their game on Tuesday against Kountze with their next game at home on Friday, January 16. Orangefield will play Kirbyville who the Lady Bobcats beat in the first half 57-38 at Kirbyville.
