Hometown News For Orange County, Texas
The West Orange-Stark Mustangs football season came to a sudden end this past Friday night in Magnolia as the Waco La Vega Pirates advance to the third round of the Class 4A Division 2 playoffs.
La Vega defeated WO-S, 42-20, behind several big plays in a high-scoring second-half at Bulldogs Stadium in Magnolia.
La Vega led 7-0 at halftime courtesy of a 1-yard touchdown run by Pirates quarterback Kourtney Parr late in the second quarter as both defenses were able to keep each opposing offense limited in big plays. That did not hold constant for the second half.
The third quarter started with a 78-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by La Vega's Jabarie Thornton for a 14-0 lead. WO-S responded on the next drive as Raymond Mallett Jr. scored on a 26-yard run to cut the Pirates advantage to 14-7.
The Pirates would score two more touchdowns on its next two possessions, an 18-yard run and a 23-yard run, while forcing the Mustangs to turn the ball over on downs.
West Orange-Stark would cut into the La Vega lead when running back Khelvy Jefferson scored on an 8-yard run to make the score, 28-13. Unfortunately, the momentum would not hold as Thornton once again returned a kickoff for a touchdown, this time from 76 yards, to extend the Pirates lead to 35-13.
A 4-yard touchdown run by Elbert Jones on the next drive would cement the La Vega victory, but the Mustangs did manage one more touchdown on a 8-yard pass from Marcus Turner Jr. to receiver Miketavion Davis.
The Mustangs (9-3) finish the season as an Area finalist and the second place team from District 9-4A D2. La Vega advances to the third round and will play Silsbee.
